What is a District Parent Trainer (DPT)?

Parent Trainers are largely parents of children with special educational needs who are attending public school.

What will a District Parent Trainer (DPT) do?

Parent Trainers will focus on facilitating the dissemination of information and conduct parent meetings/trainings.  The purpose of PTI Parent Trainers is to provide parents support and information to become their child's best advocate.  PTI Parent Trainers will be trained in presenting such topics as: Building a Parent/School Team; How Parents Contribute to the IEP Process; and Parents Rights and Responsibilities.

In 2008, there will be a total of approximately 10 to 15 Parent Trainers ; 2 or 3 from each of the four corners and 2 or 3 from the central part of the state.  Parent Trainers will be paid a stipend for each training.  There will be 2 trainings conducted per grant year in each of the five areas, one in the fall and one in the spring.
